The Relais alla Corte del Sole has a superb location—conveniently close to Cortona and Montepulciano, yet snuggled in the tranquil countryside. This gem of a small hotel is owned by the gracious Spiganti family whose famed Tonino Restaurant in Cortona prepares such exceptional cuisine that the late Pope invited the chef to prepare his Christmas dinner. To complement their restaurant, the Spiganti family restored five 16th-century brick farmhouses into an elegantly rustic hotel that is run by their charming daughter, Ilaria, one of the most endearing, gracious hostesses you will ever meet. No two bedrooms are alike and each has been individually decorated with fine brocade fabrics and antiques that enhance the country simplicity of beams and brick floors. The bathrooms have been personalized by a local artist whose whimsical designs reflect the various room names. The restaurant, La Corte del Sole, has a wonderful outside terrace with view. A passion for flowers is evident in the surrounding garden, which leads to a large swimming pool. Bordering Umbria and Tuscany, the Relais alla Corte del Sole is the perfect spot from which to easily explore both regions.
