If the idea of staying in an extraordinary medieval fortress that crowns a spectacular hilltown far off the beaten path appeals, you will fall in love with the Hotel della Fortezza—it is an absolute jewel. This tiny hotel is in a splendid part of Tuscany called Maremma, little known to the casual tourist, but well worth exploration. There are many walled villages in the hills that lie between Orvieto and the coast, all beckoning you to drive within their walls, but one of the most beautiful of all is Sorano. The town is nestled into a pocket of the hill, a jumble of ancient stone and stucco buildings that form a striking architectural design, and crowning the top of the town is the imposing Orsini Fortress. You enter through an impressive gate, cross a stone bridge over what was once a moat, then pass through a tower gate and into the fortress where you find the hotel. This is not a deluxe hotel nor does it pretend to be, but the interior is extremely appealing, with the guestrooms decorated with great taste, appropriate to the charm of the building. Almost all of the bedrooms have a breathtaking view of the town and beyond to the densely wooded hills. Number 16 is an especially attractive corner room, larger than most, with handsome antique headboards and windows on two sides. However, even the smaller rooms have sensational views. This area is well known for its many walking trails.
