Lucca is an outstanding walled town—truly one of Italy’s jewels. If you want to visit Lucca, but prefer staying in the countryside, just a ten-minute drive away sits the sumptuous Locanda L’Elisa, a pretty, deep-lavender villa with white trim peeking out from the trees. The hotel has the appearance of a private home and, happily, this intimate, homelike quality remains even after you step inside where you are warmly greeted. As you look around, it is obvious that this was previously the residence of a wealthy family. Fine antiques, splendid paintings, and luxurious fabrics combine to create a mood of refined elegance. All of the guestrooms are individually decorated, but exude a similar old-world ambiance created with dark woods and opulent materials. The walls are richly covered in damask fabrics that color-coordinate with the draperies and bedspreads. However, the mood changes dramatically in the appealing dining room, found in a glass-enclosed conservatory. During the day, sunlight streams in through the windows and guests can enjoy both excellent cuisine and a view of the trees, green lawn, and colorful, well-tended beds of flowers. In this same garden you find a refreshing swimming pool. The Locanda L’Elisa is a very special luxury hideaway with a gracious warmth of welcome.
