If your dream is to discover a small luxury hotel in Tuscany that is truly “off the beaten path” look no further—the romantic Locanda Le Piazze is about as remote as you will find. Tucked in the heart of Tuscany’s richest wine-growing region, the hotel crowns a gentle hill. In every direction there is nothing but a breathtaking patchwork of vineyards sweeping like the open sea across undulating hills, dotted with enchanting old farmhouses. After three years in which the buildings were totally renovated and a beautiful pool added, the hotel opened to guests in the summer of 1995. It is no wonder the design and decor are in absolutely faultless taste: the owner, Maureen Bonini, has for over 40 years been a design consultant in Florence. All of the hotel’s rooms exude sophisticated country elegance. Huge bouquets of fresh flowers highlight white walls, terracotta floors, and beamed ceilings. Each of the guestrooms has its own personality, but all exude a similar comfortable, homelike ambiance. The fabrics used throughout are all from Maureen’s good friend, Ralph Lauren. The stunning swimming pool, tucked in the vineyards, is reached by a path through fragrant beds of lavender.
