Karen's Review Of This Property:

The marvelously scenic Langhe wine country, rivaling Chianti but without all the tourists, was in dire need of an upscale property in a historical residence and the San Maurizio fulfilled the void nicely. This super inn poised up on a hill looking over vineyards and olive groves has undergone a courageous and lengthy restoration. Originally a Cistercian monastery, the massive U-shaped building around a lovely rose garden has 31 elegantly appointed rooms (most are suites), created from the monks’ cells, each equipped with all amenities and technological conveniences. Many architectural features have been enhanced including soaring ceilings with frescoes, original wood or brick floors, arched doorways, plus a chapel and vaulted wine cellars dating to the 17th century. Guests can lounge in one of a series of grand sitting rooms, appointed with antiques, Oriental carpets, and gold-framed paintings, or outdoors in the surrounding gardens with walks. The formal restaurant with Michelin star, of renowned chef Guido di Costigliole, and run by Lidia Alciati e Luca Zecchin, concentrates on the best regional cuisine, accompanied of course by the rich selection of local wines. Outings on horseback, golf, and guided historical visits of castles and wineries can be organized. A swimming pool and full spa are right on the premises.
