The story goes that two hundred years ago a wealthy merchant from Genoa fell in love with a Chinese woman and had his extravagant seaside residence built in oriental style. This romantic air lingers at the Cavaliere family’s Villa Pagoda, an intimate hotel with plenty of attractive features. The whimsical six-tiered villa is full of character and charm due to its irregular-shaped architecture and one can just imagine the glamorous parties that were held in the main salon with enormous Murano chandelier, grand piano and polished Carrara marble floors. Antiques and precious artwork, including an impressive collection of small Mirò lithographs, decorate the stairways of the home with its 18 bedrooms and junior suites of various dimensions. The most desirable ones are the sea-view rooms at the very top. Almost all rooms now have renovated bathrooms and parquet floors. Surrounding the villa is a lush park and garden stretching down to the sea where the town’s elevated 2-kilometer promenade with spectacular views is reached. Il Roseto is the name of the restaurant which serves gourmet seafood in the large dining room opening up to the garden with outdoor seating. A second more intimate dining room upstairs is where a delectable buffet breakfast is served. From here you are conveniently based to tour several interesting local museums, the restored historic center of Genova, Portofino and Cinque Terre areas.
