Karen's Review Of This Property:
The choice place to stay in Amalfi is the deluxe Hotel Santa Caterina. It is not in the town center, but since Amalfi has the main highway separating it from the sea, the hotel has a far superior setting—just to the north of town on a cliff rising above the blue Mediterranean. Although larger than most hotels in our guide, the Santa Caterina has the intimacy and warmth of a small hotel. Since 1880 the property has belonged to the Gambardella family who has imbued in their excellent staff the art of making each guest feel special and with over 100 staff members for 62 rooms, you can understand how everyone is properly pampered. The hotel terraces down the hill from the highway to the sea where you find a large saltwater swimming pool. Guestrooms, all individual in decor, are charming, with whitewashed walls, antique furniture accents, and colorful, local, handmade tiles on the floors and in the bathrooms. Many rooms have a balcony with a view to the sea. The main dining room is cheerful, with coved ceiling and sunlight streaming in through walls of glass. However, most guests choose to dine outside on the bougainvillea-bedecked terrace. On a terrace above the pool is a second outdoor restaurant where lunch is served. Almost all of the fruits and vegetables used in the restaurant are freshly gathered from the hotel’s own gardens. If you want to splurge, there are several cottages tucked in amongst the lemon orchards.
