Clinging to the steep hillside above the beautiful coast of Basilicata, Maratea is a charming village of very old colorful houses and narrow cobbled streets. As the road loops ever-upward through the town, you soon come to the Locanda delle Donne Monache, carved into the rocky slope next to the tiny parish church of St. Maria. Originally a nunnery dating back to the early 1700s, the convent has been transformed into a deluxe small hotel. The exterior—salmon-colored stuccoed walls with white trim and rustic heavy-tiled roof—blends well with other houses in the village. Inside, the color scheme continues with sky-blue added for accent. The bedrooms are tucked throughout the hotel, each taking advantage of its special vista. The largest guestrooms are designated as suites. Number 9 is especially interesting, with a dramatic bathtub carved into the rocks and a pretty view out over the tiled rooftops. The most outstanding feature of the hotel is its garden where, located on the upper terrace next to the small church, a swimming pool seems to float in the air, romantically suspended above the jumble of village rooftops. Overlooking the garden, on balmy summer evenings, guests enjoy superb meals outside under the stars. The quiet serenity must have appealed to the nuns so long ago.
