Whether you are cutting straight across Italy from Rome to the Adriatic Sea and need a halfway stop, or want to explore the center of the Abruzzo region, the Hotel Sole is certainly the best bet in town. The prim solar-colored residence dating to the 19th century has been completely renovated into a pleasant and efficient hotel on a quiet square a block from the main street with its cathedral and shops. A spacious, rather standard reception area with striped upholstered sofas greets guests. All 51 rooms have been given a classic décor and outfitted with many modern amenities including internet in rooms. Right within the hotel is the city’s most acclaimed restaurant, "Locanda del Moro", elegantly appointed, where the buffet breakfast is also served. L’Aquila is surrounded by mountains, nature parks, and ski resorts with majestic Gran Sasso, the highest peak of the Alpennines, being the focal point. The city features two ancient churches from the 12th century, a 19th-century theater, and a curious fountain with 99 spouts each with a different sculpted face representing the 99 castles and villages of this territory in that historical period.
