The Glen Sketch

Karen's Review Of This Property:

An impressive tree lined gravel drive leads to Glen house and its gardens, surrounded by three hundred acres of farmland and with sweeping views down to Courtmacsherry Bay and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Ten generations of the Scott family have farmed the land since the mid 1600’s. The house dates back to 1860 but adjacent outbuildings are even older. Current owners Guy and Dianna have renovated and remodeled to provide four extremely comfortable bedrooms and a family suite, three of the rooms have ocean views, all have modern en-suite bathrooms. Guests can relax in front of the fire in the comfortable drawing room or, weather permitting, investigate the walled garden. Diana prides herself on the use of local produce, home grown fruits and vegetables and free range eggs from her own hens. The comprehensive breakfast menu is served on individual tables in the dining room under the watchful stare of John’s predecessors, looking down from their framed photographs on the wall. Kinsale, with its shops and restaurants, is just a twenty minute drive away.

The Glen is a magical place and you know that as soon as your car enters through the gates and continues up the tree and flower lined driveway. It only gets better as you turn in front of the vine covered two story home. Paddy and Chloe, English Springer Spaniels, arrive first to greet you. Then Diana appears and warmly meets you before you enter and welcomes you inside. Oh, what a warm and lovely home. Fresh flowers, antiques and very tastefully decorated, you know you have found paradise and want to stay forever. The upstairs is equally enticing and bedroom 1 was my choice and oh so charming. You awaken to the sound of birds singing outside your window and no car noises. There is a lovely view of the gardens and beyond to the sea. After taking a very nice hot shower, you go downstairs to the beautiful deeply colored red dining room with its individual nicely clothed tables decorated with fresh flowers and lovely china. Guy will shortly arrive to take your order. There are many good choices, but my favorite was the buttermilk pancakes. Also, there is a small buffet with fruit, yogurt, granola, and cereal. In addition, Guy will bring you an assortment of bread; my favorite was the soda bread, freshly baked by Diana. If you are looking for tranquility, charm, good taste (but not pretentious), this is the place to stay. The Glen truly captures the essence of a European country house.
