Shelburne Lodge Sketch

Karen's Review Of This Property:

We continue to receive rave reviews on Shelburne Lodge praising not only the high quality of the decor, but also the delicious breakfasts. The building, a Georgian farmhouse, is lovely and the grounds with their lawns, herb garden, and tennis court are very attractive, but it is the interior that is outstanding. The polished wooden floors gleam and lovely antiques grace the sitting room and hallway. Admire Maura’s enviable art collection—all by local artists. Each lovely bedroom is accompanied by a luxurious bathroom, each with a different color scheme. Of course, the towel rails are heated and you’ll find books of just the sort you want to read and browse through in your room. The same attention to detail goes into the scrumptious breakfast she prepares—even the compote of fresh fruits is artfully garnished. Husband Tom is helpful and friendly, always there with a map and pointing guests in the right direction. Kenmare has some excellent restaurants and Maura as former chef at one of the best (Packies) is happy to make recommendations (advance reservations are a must). Maura also helps her sister Grainne at The Purple Heather, a great venue for lunch or snacks. After dinner wander into one of Kenmare’s many pubs—there’s entertainment and music to suit all tastes.

We’ve just returned from three weeks in Ireland, staying almost every night in one of the places featured in our Karen Brown book. They were all great, and Shelburne Lodge was our hands-down favorite of them all. Maura and Tom are wonderful. Gracious, engaging, and extraordinarily helpful. While driving the Beara Peninsula one day, we blew a tire on our rental car. Tom not only recommended a garage where it could be fixed, but also called ahead to notify the owner we were coming, and sent a personal note of introduction along with us. Even though the garage was quite busy, Tom’s note put us at the head of the line, and had us back on the road within 30 minutes. Shelburne Lodge is a wonderful old house, but the decor is closer to Carmel, California than to musty Victoriana. Maura’s genius extends far beyond the kitchen. The entire house is warm, beautifully decorated, and immensely comfortable. We’d come back in a heartbeat. And we probably will.

Have been using your guides for years and always love your recommendations for hotels and itineraries. Just stayed in the Shelburne Lodge in Kenmare, Ireland last week and found it every bit as charming as you said it was. Tom and Maura were incredible hosts and Maura is a fabulous cook. We had a family group of 14 and everyone had a great time!

We recently stayed at the Shelburne Lodge in Kenmare based on your recommendation. It was as advertised. Could not have been better. Thanks
