Karen's Review Of This Property:
I’m impressed that Pyers O’Connor Nash’s home is built on land that has belonged to his family for over 2,000 years, the ancestral home of the O’Conors of Connaught, descendants of the last High Kings of Ireland and traditional Kings of Connaught. And what a home it is, a grand 45-room Victorian Italianate mansion full of fascinating heirlooms and lovely antique furnishings. There’s the coronation stone of the Kings of Connaught by the front door, Carolan’s harp, rare manuscripts, and a vast array of family portraits. It could be daunting, but Pyer’s and Marguerite’s way of sharing their home makes it entrancing: the tremendous dining room with its Sheffield silver from the Great Exhibition, the wondrous array of books in the library, the elegant drawing room. I loved room 13, huge with its historic four-poster bed, fabulous views, and large bathroom with bath and shower; but opted for the green room, my favorite, with its tall four-poster bed and large bathroom. The former billiard room displays interesting manuscripts, and there’s a small museum of lace and costumes. When the house is open to the public (June to August) guests are welcome to tag along on the 4 pm tour. On the grounds are three cottages let on a weekly, self-catering basis. Galway and Sligo are an hours drive away.
