It is always a real delight to discover a modern hotel that offers all the up-to-date comforts without sacrificing old-world ambiance. A fine example is the Hotel Alpenhof, with its romantic mood of Bavarian country charm. Soaring mountain peaks form the backdrop for this modern, chalet-style hotel with balconies front and back, accented by windowboxes filled with red geraniums. You enter into a cheerful reception area opening onto a cozy yet sophisticated bar. From the bar, steps lead down to the paneled dining room divided into several eating areas. My favorite is an intimate, wood-paneled room adorned with pewter trays, antique mugs, brass lamps, and an antique tiled oven. When the weather is warm, meals are also served outside in a pretty rear garden. This is a deluxe hotel with many amenities, including a modern wellness area with a magnificent indoor pool and arched windows looking out to the trees. The bedrooms continue the standard of excellence: the furnishings are new, but traditional in style and of superb quality. Splurge and request one of the more expensive back bedrooms with a balcony capturing the view of the majestic, soaring granite peaks of the Zugspitze.
