Karen's Review Of This Property:
Although we made what we thought was a real discovery, we were humbled to learn that all of Europe already seems familiar with Schloss Elmau and its cultural and artistic programs! Just down the lane from the castle sits a cozy farmhouse, the Alpengut Elmau, with the soothing sounds of a rippling stream in the background. Bikers and hikers in summer and cross-country skiers in winter find this a wonderful resting spot offering fine food and drink. For those lucky enough to spend the night here, the inn has adequate, clean, and comfortable guestrooms furnished with light-pine dressers, closets, and beds. Rooms are not overly large or luxurious, but I especially liked number 7, a twin back corner room, and number 24, another twin with a private balcony. Both overlook the back garden and a pasture with a darling stable for the horses. Guests at the inn are invited to take part in any event at Schloss Elmau and use its facilities—but it also has its own claim to fame: King Ludwig would stay here to break his journey to one of his lesser-known hunting lodges, the Schachen Schloss. Today the lodge can be reached only by a hike of 3½ hours each way. Although this weathered chalet is surprisingly nondescript on the outside, the extreme interior decor definitely reflects the mad king’s eccentricity!
