Whether you’re in Augsburg—the third largest city in Bavaria—on business or pleasure, the Romantik Hotel Augsburger Hof offers supreme service and contemporary comforts in a perfect location. Under the direction of Herr and Frau Meder and their pleasant staff, this intimate boutique hotel, with just thirty-six rooms, achieves that subtle balance of attentive service while respecting guests’ privacy. Fax and modem connections in all the rooms make life easy for the business travelers who flock mid-week. For a little more tradition and charm, request one of the six Romantik rooms, which are outfitted in authentic Bavarian décor, with handsome paneled walls and country fabrics; they also overlook the pretty central courtyard. All the guestrooms boast modern bathrooms and televisions. Enjoy a cocktail in the spacious lobby bar and then dine either in the airy and light central Winter Garden Restaurant or the more traditional and elegant Bavarian restaurant. We sampled some of the tenderest veal, accompanied by delicious, seasonal “spargel” and a regional speciality of pork loin in peppercorn sauce. After dinner take a stroll through this lively universtity town, which was named for its founder, Caesar Augustus. And be sure not to miss the town’s thousand-year-old cathedral(Dom).
