Karen's Review Of This Property:

Located on the outskirts of Les Andelys, the Hôtel de la Chaîne d’Or looks up to the castle ruins and backs onto the Seine. Just an hour or so to the north of Paris, Les Andelys is convenient to Charles de Gaulle airport and Roissy and just a few kilometers from Giverny, Monet’s home: a visit to Monet’s home and the gardens that inspired his genius will prove a highlight of your trip. The hotel is managed by Stéphanie and Oliver Bicot who take pride in welcoming guests and oversee the restaurant. Of the twelve bedrooms, six (1, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 11) overlook the river and enjoy views of the Seine and the constant, entertaining parade of barges. Room 10 is a spacious king-bedded room and room 1 is set with twins—both have water views. I especially like room 7, an end room, overlooking the water traffic, cozy in its soft decor of pink. The restaurant windows look over the Seine and across to a small island with an abandoned manor. It is an intimate place for lunch or dinner: the service is relaxed and comfortable and the menu offers an appealing selection of items. The owners recommend that overnight guests dine at the hotel.

The setting was terrific. We stayed in room 10 with 2 large windows overlooking the river. I could have watched the boats and swans all day. The room was a tiny bit tired and the bathroom basic but the view more than made up for that. The dining room is as charming as it can be and the food surperior. The staff was very helpful and gracious especially after learning our San Diego home had been evacuated in the fires. The gave us access to the internet and cell phones to call home (not burned). We highly recommend.

A wonderful location, but not a three star hotel -- carpets were torn and dirty, bath towels were paper thin, the only toilet item provided was a discount hotel sytle bar of soap, no robes, and the plastic chairs in the outdoor terrace area were filthy. The hotel does require that you eat there during the high season. However, the menu to which you are given access is very limited. For example, there were three main dishes two of which (rabbit and kidneys) had very limited appeal. Since the wine list is very pricey so the overall value of the room/dining package is not that great. Since the menu does not change day-to-day, the limited nature of the offerings can be a problem for visitors who plan on staying more than one night. In fact, we requested and obtained permission from the hotel manager to eat off site on our last night with the understanding that the room rate for that night would be adjusted. When I went to pay the bill, I learned that we were being charged the full rate for our last night. Despite explaining my prior conversation with the manager, the hotel refused to provide an adjustment.

PROPERTY RESPONSE:

Dear Anonymous!
Please believe that we are really sorry about the way you feel... Fortunately the great majority of our guests comes back year after year... nevertheless, we really could have been of help if only you had let me know when you were here or the day of your departure by offering you your stay...
