Karen's Review Of This Property:
If World War II fascinates you, you must visit Thionville. And if you do, you must stay in the Romantik Hotel L’Horizon, a friendly, family-managed hotel that has a terrace overlooking the city. Although the hotel offers nice accommodations and good food, it is the owner, Jean-Pascal Speck, who makes your stay here so special. He is a passionate historian whose rich knowledge of the military campaigns that took place nearby is astounding. You will be spellbound by his tales. The popular focus for travelers coming to the area is to visit the Maginot Line, an amazing engineering masterpiece which the French built to ward off an invasion by Germany. There are many relics left, but one of the most remarkable sites to visit along the Maginot Line is the Hackenberg Fortress in Thionville, easily accessible from the Romantik Hotel L’Horizon. The museum here is fantastic. If you have any interest at all in military history, you will be astonished. You cannot tour the museum by yourself since you need a guide to take you by train deep into the myriad of tunnels that lace the hillside. If a visit to the Maginot Line is the focus of your trip to Thionville, be sure to mention this when making reservations since tours do not take place all year and prior arrangement must be made in advance for an English speaking guide.
