Karen's Review Of This Property:
Tours is in the center of the Loire Valley, which makes it a good base for exploring the region. It has the added advantage of being on the main rail route to Paris—less than an hour away by express train. For those taking advantage of this mode of transportation, the Hotel de l’Univers is a most convenient location since it is only a block from the train station and in a very pretty part of the city. The hotel, the oldest in Tours, dating back to 1846, is built of stone and accented by a green awning and a row of wrought-iron lamps. It has 85 rather commercial-looking guestrooms, each with built-in side tables, reading lights above the bed, a sitting area, and tiled bathroom. There is no need to splurge on a suite since the regular rooms are certainly adequate. Just beyond the reception foyer there is large lounge with beige-colored leather sofas placed around the perimeter and at the end of the room, a sweeping staircase leading to an upper mezzanine floor. There is a really fun, whimsical touch to this room since a continuation of a “real” balcony has been cleverly duplicated in a painted balcony that wraps around the walls. Looking down from this balcony are the standing figures of some of the illustrious guests who have stayed at Hotel de l’Univers over the years, such as Katherine Hepburn, Ernest Hemingway, and Maurice Chevalier.
