A trip to Sooke Harbour House is a journey to Alice’s Wonderland, where the impossible is, in fact, very naturally possible. Each guestroom is its own story, its own brand of magic brought to life by local craftsmen, painters, potters, and wizards making visible the dream life of Sinclair and Frederique (Fred) Philip: beautiful mosaic work in gravel paths that wend through storybook gardens, set along the crashing shore; authentic Island Indian totems and ceremonial pieces, so large you’ll think you’ve eaten the cake labeled “Eat Me” and have shrunk to a fraction of your former size; a stained-glass shower designed in joyous, floral patterns to reflect the garden outside; a delicate piece of pastel silk to cover the window and flow in the breeze. There’s a chandelier in the bathroom; there are buttons on the bed cover. The headboard’s a tree and the sink’s not a sink but a mixing bowl. No two rooms are alike, but each is fanciful perfection. All come with a wood-burning fireplace, an endless supply of kindling, and a soul-stirring view of the water (save one). Breakfast is delivered to your door whenever you want it. One of the best restaurants in Canada is right downstairs. Sooke Harbour House is private, playful, elegant, intimate, imaginative, intelligent, and sophisticated. To top it all off wonderful massages are available.
