Karen's Review Of This Property:
Hallstatt is one of the most beautiful towns in Austria—a 700-year-old village clinging to hills that rise abruptly from the waters of the Hallstätter See. In the center of the village is a charming square enclosed by colorful houses and tucked into one of the corners of the square, with its flower-laden balconies just peeking into view, is the Gasthof Zauner. You enter a tiny hallway and then go up a flight of stairs to two very attractive, wood-paneled dining rooms where the food is extraordinary. Grilled specialties always highlight the menu, including, of course, fresh fish. Ask if reinanke (a fish from the Hallstätter See) is on the menu—it is delicious. The Gasthof Zauner has been in the same family for many generations. Your charming host, Sepp Zauner, is both manager and chef. From the dining level, a staircase leads up to the snug but appealing guestrooms, all furnished in a rustic, regional style with beds, tables, chests, and armoires made from a honey-toned pine native to this area. All have balconies. Room 28 is a very special room with a view out over the rooftops to the lake. Plan to stay at least several days. Hallstatt makes an excellent base for exploring the many wonders of this region, including the ice caves and prehistoric salt mines that date back to 5000 B.C. Note: As a hotel guest you can drive in and park at the heart of town.
