Karen's Review Of This Property:
If you are looking for a small hotel in the heart of Salzburg that offers comfortable accommodation, and warmth of welcome, yet does not cost a fortune, the Elefant is a fabulous choice. This small hotel is tucked into a narrow side street off the Getreidegasse, Salzburg’s famous, colorful shopping street. The hotel is named for an elephant brought over the Brenner Pass in 1552 as a gift to the Emperor Maximilian II. The elephant caused such excitement that several inns along the way were renamed “Elefant.” The house is over 700 years old and has been documented as an inn for the past 400 years. The hotel has been in the Mayr family for several generations and it is their tradition of extending to guests true Austrian hospitality that makes this inn so special. Frau Mayr is directly involved with the management, seeing that guests are made welcome and also personally oversees the dining. The hotel’s restaurant is very popular with guests as well as locals. The breakfast room has been expanded to accommodate, if need be, all the guests at one sitting and is very handsome with its new decor. Public areas include a sitting area off the lobby as well as a beautiful private lounge for guests upstairs. Because the building is so old, the bedrooms naturally differ in size and shape and vary in decor from contemporary to traditional but all have air conditioning. Third floor rooms are set under beams and fifth floor rooms enjoy views of the fortress.
