The Zum Grünen Baum is quite an unexpected surprise. You would never expect to find a hotel with so much character and sophisticated charm in such an off-the-beaten-path location. Ysper is tiny and untouristy, yet conveniently located for exploring this enticing region—close to the vineyards and convenient for visiting the many castles, churches, and abbeys in the area. Perhaps this small hotel has such heart because it has been in Frau Rotter’s family for 350 years—always as an inn with an adjacent farm. The Rotters seem to accept a responsibility from their astounding heritage that ties them to the land, and thus have taken great care to preserve the authentic character of the house. The renovations have been accomplished with sensitivity and all of the rooms have a charming simplicity. From the moment you step into the entry hall, you are surrounded by a cozy, rustic ambiance that is achieved by the use of country-style antiques. Some are family heirlooms, others Frau Rotter has collected over the years. In addition to the painted armoires, old clocks, dowry chests, spinning wheels, farm implements, antique glass, colorful plates, and cradles, the walls display many original Austrian paintings that have been collected by Herr Rotter. But it is not the furnishings that make a stay here so special—it is the wonderful hospitality of your hosts whose sincere warmth of welcome is as genuine as their historical inn.
