At the Sign of the Angel

At the Sign of the Angel is a black-and-white timbered inn at the heart of the lovely National Trust Village of Lacock. This 15th-century wool merchant’s house is easy to spot as it contrasts strikingly with the neighboring stone buildings. Heavy old beams, low ceilings, and crooked walls are the order of the day at this old inn. Three delightful little dining rooms have their candlelit tables set before blazing fires for dinner. Choose from the set dinner menu or an a la carte featuring British specialties such as steak and kidney pie, Welsh rack of Lamb and Scottish salmon, with sticky toffee pudding and strawberries, meringues and clotted cream desserts (vegetarian fare available). Guests have a spacious paneled sitting room—upstairs. What we thought was a secret passage turned, and allegedly a priest hole, turned out to be the access to room 4 with its high beamed ceiling. Room 3 overlooking the front street, the most spacious, has 5’ doorways to both the bedroom and the bathroom. We loved the coziness of our bedroom overlooking the garden (room 2). If you are looking for more space for larger luggage opt for rooms in the cottage across the garden. Lacock is just 12 miles from Bath.
