Karen's Review Of This Property:
To stay at the Riffelalp, sitting high on a plateau above the city of Zermatt, is to enjoy an elegant resort oasis and unobstructed views of the Matterhorn in a spectacular Alpine setting. As the name implies, the hotel lies 2222 meters (7290 ft.) above sea level on the southern edge of a plateau, at the heart of the Gornergrat skiing/hiking district. During a renovation the original four-story, cream-stucco hotel was gutted and the ambiance of a gorgeous Alpine chalet was created using beautiful Alpine pines for much of the flooring and walls, and even as the basis for the hand-painted ceilings. The attractive bar with its large open fireplace and many cozy sitting areas invite for a drink before or after dinner. The main Alexander Restaurant has intimate seating areas that are created by partitioning off tables and booths, and tables spill out onto the terrace for summer breakfasts or lunches. The lovely guestrooms, all with modern bathroom conveniences and Jacuzzis, have a beautiful Alpine decor and most enjoy views of the Matterhorn. The pool and spa area St-Trop-Alp, with Europe’s highest outdoor pool welcomes you. Once you arrive in this idyllic but isolated setting you will not want to leave so the hotel provides many attractions including an underground bowling alley, winetasting, Swiss cheese and Italian restaurants, guided walking and skiing trips as well as ski-in and ski-out access.
