Karen's Review Of This Property:
Hotel Edelweiss
On a sunny day, one of the most breathtaking drives in Switzerland is through the spectacular Lötschental Valley that ends at the hamlet of Fafleralp, at the foot of Breithorn glacier. Along the way you pass through the picturesque hillside village of Blatten. The Hotel Edelweiss is right in the center of town with a glorious position overlooking the valley and up to mountains. The exterior of the hotel is very appealing: a three-story chalet-style house with a dark wood façade, balconies, and window boxes with cascading red geraniums. Although the front of the hotel is attractive, it is not until you walk onto the huge terrace in the back that the true glory of the hotel is revealed. Enjoy an unsurpassed, unobstructed view of the valley and stunning mountains beyond. Tables and chairs shaded by umbrellas dot the terrace, the heart of the hotel where everyone gathers on sunny days. In cold weather, there is pleasant indoor dining room. The guestrooms (most with balconies) have light wood-paneled walls, plump down comforters, and large windows that let in lots of sunlight. The Edelweiss is a small, simple, family-run hotel offering guests genuine hospitality, great food, very comfortable accommodations, and a superb base from which to take hikes. The Hotel Edelweiss has been a family operation for many years and Lukas Kalbermatten is the third generation to own the hotel.

Mr. Lukas Kalbermatten has responded to the comments about his charging for tap water and with his permission we have paraphrased his response in the following:
Until two years ago, bottled water was trucked many miles to the Hotel Edelweiss. The hotel, in an effort to due their part in reducing carbon emissions from burning combustion fuel decided to serve their local water which, they felt, was the equal if not superior to what was being brought in. In an effort to re-coup some of the lost revenue from not selling bottled water they began charging for tap water albeit at less than half the cost of bottled water. Even at the reduced rates the hotel says they are still making less than they would if they sold bottled water. According to the hotel, charging for tap water is becoming more and more common in Switzerland. The hotel also says the price of their water is listed on the food menus and on the tables with prices for their local wines. These prices are listed in German which may be how the problem arose.
