Hotel Privata

The village of Sils-Maria is idyllic, nestled on a strip of land dividing two mountain-bound lakes. The Hotel Privata is a charming inn, offering very reasonably priced accommodation and some of the region’s most gracious hospitality. Family-run, the pretty, four-story, beige building with brown shutters is located on a small village square. Just to the left of the building is the gathering place for the colorful horse-drawn carriages that take guests into beautiful Val Fex. The hotel is strategically located for hiking—just outside the door, trails lead off in every direction: up into the mountains, into the meadows, around the lakes, and along the rushing creek. This is a pretty inn and I love its comfortable ambiance with crisp white linens, fresh flowers, and endless thoughtful touches. The flagstone entrance with a reception counter opens onto two cozy lounges. A hallway leads to an especially attractive, spacious dining room with windows overlooking the back garden with some lovely sitting places and a sheltered veranda. The dining room has a paneled ceiling, an antique armoire, pine chairs, and fresh flowers everywhere. The dinner is a four-course menu and the food is excellent. The Giovanoli Family are very involved in their family-hotel and it is their warmth of welcome and professional approach to hospitality that make the Hotel Privata very special.  Although, no longer at the hotel on a daily basis, Ursula and Dumeng, you will still sense their presence if nothing else  with Dumeng’s Olympic Gold medal and photos on display. Their charming daughter, Corina is now ever-present and continues in the tradition of her parents.
