Many visitors come to this North Umpqua paradise for some of the best fly-fishing in the world, but anyone venturing this way will be richly rewarded. The setting is spectacular: lush, fragrant, cool, unspoiled, with the crashing of the mighty river to overtake your senses. Several types of accommodations are available, all sophisticatedly simple. Below the main building sit eight Streamside Cabins that share a common veranda. Moderate in size, pine-paneled, and handsomely appointed, they are exhilaratingly close to the river. We stayed in one of the Hideaway Cottages about half a mile upriver in a very private setting. Cottages come with a mini-kitchen, king bed, tiled soaking tub/shower, a wood-burning fireplace, and an upstairs loft with twin beds. River Suites are like small homes and offer river views and privacy. The Steamboat is well known for is its evening meal. It begins in the garden-view library where hors d’oeuvres and complimentary wines are served and guests have a chance to mingle. After a while, all are escorted to the lobby area to take a seat at one massive, wood table set beautifully with candles and fresh flowers. Our dinner was exceptional: buttery Chinook salmon, fresh vegetables, roasted potatoes, bread warm from the oven and great conversation. In season, breakfast and lunch are also served in the dining area.
