Maroma

Less than an hour’s drive south of Cancún (yet light years away in mood), the Maroma is an intimate, luxurious, beachfront hotel where the pampered guests are known and greeted by their first name. The owners consider the Maroma their home: a home with guestrooms for visiting friends, which is how the tale began. In 1980, your delightful hostess, Sally, made a brief trip from Chicago to Cancún. While there, she fell in love with the gentle beauty of the Caribbean and with José Luis Moreno, who took her to see a gorgeous property he owned with dense jungle growing to the edge of an endless stretch of stunning white-sand beach. Sally and José Luis married and their hideaway cottage grew into a permanent residence, always filled with friends. When rebuilding after a devastating hurricane in 1988, it seemed the perfect opportunity to add more bedrooms and transform Maroma into a hotel. Guestrooms are individual in decor, yet all exude a quiet, tasteful, rustic appeal, with native handicrafts used throughout. Hammocks swing lazily from the porch or balcony, enticing one to forget the cares of the world. The beach is superb and studded by small palapas, which shade comfortable lounge chairs. Nearby you find a lovely swimming pool, an open-air restaurant, and an elegant, gourmet restaurant with truly outstanding food.
