Gutenbergs Hotel

Riga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a delightful medieval city brimming with fascinating places to discover within its maze of narrow streets. If you want to be in the heart of town, Gutenbergs Hotel has an excellent location. It is tucked on a tiny side street just a few minutes’ walk from one of Riga’s large squares that is highlighted by the Dom Church. Although many hotels have been bought by corporations, Gutenbergs is still owned by the Solimu family who take pride in caring for their guests and making them feel “at home”. The building is imbued with history. Parts of the hotel date back to the 16^th and 17^th centuries. In its early days it functioned as a printing house. When it became a hotel in 2001 it assumed the name of Gutenberg in honor of one of Johannes Gutenberg, who invented the printing press in the 14^th century and whose sculpture adorns the entrance to the hotel. Gutenbergs delights in highlighting its historical origins. Everything harks back to the past with many oil paintings, lovely landscapes, antique furnishings, copies of the famous Gutenberg Bible, and very old engravings. Although the ambiance is old world, the accommodations have all the up-to-date conveniences such as satellite television, coffee makers in the rooms, mini-bar, and internet access. There are two restaurants. The cozy one on the first floor specializes in classic Latvian and German dishes. The second restaurant (only open during the warm months of the year) is perched on the rooftop and offers exceptionally romantic views. If you enjoy walking, you can explore the intriguing town of Riga with no need of a car; just steps away is one of the main squares enhanced by the Dome Cathedral, which makes a good landmark when making your way back to the hotel after a day of sightseeing.
