Italy - Umbria
L’Antico Forziere in the capable hands of Daniela and her industrious family, formerly the manager of another hotel in the guide, is a pleasant and strategic place from which to tour the highlights of Umbria. The ancient stone fortress building on the Tiber river, is located just off the main road which leads to Deruta, one of Italy’s most famous ceramic centers. The views from the house and swimming pool over the valley are quite lovely. Attention has been given to the preservation of the centuries-old building, with exposed stone walls, handmade brickwork, wood beamed ceilings. Accommodation within 2 suites with independent garden entrance or 7 double rooms are appointed in typical Umbrian style with iron wrought beds, hand-woven local fabrics and simple country furniture and many amenities including wireless internet access. High emphasis has been given to the restaurant where sons, Stefano and Andrea continue to work wonders, serving excellent local fare including fish and meat specialties within the vaulted brick and stone dining room where many come for a specially-prepared national and regional meal. Daniela’s husband and third son, Samuele, take care of the general property and serve in the restaurant. Perugia, Assisi, Todi, Orvieto and Spoleto are all within 30 minutes of this base. Excellent value and hospitality.
L’Antico Forziere is situated in Casalina near Deruta, the town world-famous for ceramic art, and between Perugia and Todi. Its excellent position allows easy access to some of the most important points of interest in Umbria: Assisi (15 mins), Spello (15 mins), Perugia (10 mins), Todi (15 mins), Spoleto (20 mins). From north: Autostrada A1 towards Roma, exit for Valdichiana, take the superstrada (dual-carriage way) E45 towards Terni-Roma and exit for Casalina. This property is everything that was promised in the Karen Brown review: location, room quality, swimming pool, restaurant. In particular, Samuele’s front desk support and the dining room/restaurant are exceptional. Yes, the location is perfect for touring all of southern Umbria’s magnificent attractions. But the dining room is the top attraction if you\’re interested in reasonably priced, top-notch culinary delights. The evening menu and wine lists are expansive. There is something for anyone, lamb, beef, fish, veal, pork. Twin brothers Stefano and Andrea deliver perfectly prepared, sumptuous dishes. We dined there for 5 of 6 evenings (unfortunately they are closed on Mondays). The wine list is extensive, but we stuck to the Umbrian offerings which never failed. And the cost of both the meals and the wine are comparable to what other far less sophisticated restaurants in the area have to offer. There is a reason why Trip Advisor rates them the top restaurant in Deruta. We will base ourselves here again should we return to Umbria. We were treated like family from the best family-operated we’ve ever visited.
