Torre di Bellosguardo:

The Torre di Bellosguardo is a romantic historic villa nestled on the shelf of a hill with an unsurpassed view of Florence. Below the enormous castle-like home, the tiled rooftops, steeples, towers, and domes of the city seem like a fairyland at your fingertips. It is not surprising that the setting of the Torre di Bellosguardo is so breathtaking: it was chosen by a nobleman, Guido Cavalcanti (a friend of Dante), as the most beautiful site in Florence. The villa is owned today by Amerigo Franchetti who takes great pride in his stunning home and, with a passion for perfection, is restoring the villa to its original glory. The spacious austere guestrooms with views are decorated in authentic period antiques and vary in size as they would in a private home with few frills. Other rooms include frescoed ballroom, Orangerie, and upstairs loggia terrace. The most splendid features of the hotel are its incredible setting and meticulously groomed botanical garden, which highlights a swimming pool set on a terrace overlooking Florence, Brunelleschi cupola and all. In summer lunch is served by the swimming pool, otherwise breakfast is the only meal available. For dinner, you must wind down a narrow twisting road to go to a restaurant. If you want to walk into Florence, ask about the “secret” path—a short cut down the hill to the city (15 minute walk). Down a level through an underground tunnel a small pool, sauna and steam room.

The Torre, view, and pool are wonderful. The public rooms are great during the day, but depressingly dark at night. The view from the pool is unbelievable-absolute magic when the churchbells start ringing. I’ll never forget it. Mosquitos and bees were a bit of a problem. We got a good deal on the room, but breakfast was so expensive that I ate once.

Over the past week, I had the pleasure to stay at the Hotel Torre Di Bellosguardo. This stay was by far the most interesting and wonderful of all my trips to Italy. December is the time to come as the weather was fantastic, clear, crisp skies and even snow on the day I went to the Christmas market. For the first time in Florence, I could go to the museums and churches with no queues, pure bliss! I have stayed at many 4 star hotels in numerous cities and have never found a more unique warm and friendly stay. Bellosguardo is more like being in a 14th century palace with all the amenities of a modern boutique hotel. The wonderful spaces include rooms with frescoes on the ceiling and a huge glass sunroom. The grounds also include a solarium hothouse filled with plants like my home in Hawaii including Banana trees, frangipane and a collection of chili pepper plants. I also enjoyed the gardens and walking through the olive groves. The personnel at the front desk were fantastic, offering suggestions including local and genuine trattatoria’s and hidden spots in the city only those who live in Florence would know. Each room is unique and when I arrived the staff allowed me to view those that were available. I chose room #5 which was so wonderful, perfect views of the city and grounds even from the bathroom. The history of Bellosguardo is fantastic, a 13th century tower restored with such taste as I have never seen in a hotel. Everywhere you see extraordinary tile work and masonry, the likes only found in a historic monument. Each morning I would listen for the church bells ringing below, have breakfast, and then set out for adventures in Florence. When I was through, I would come back and relax in a setting so quiet I could forget that I was in the city. In all regards, my stay was extraordinary. If you are interested in being a part of Florence, I recommend staying at Bellosguardo. I am glad I found their website which presents the hotel and all the features.
