It was built as a private home for the Feltrinelli family, who made their fortune in lumber. The building had been long neglected when Bob Burns became captivated by its romantic charm and for three years poured unrestricted love and money into meticulously returning the mansion to its original glory. Talented artisans worked around the clock restoring gorgeous murals, stained-glass windows, handsome paneling, massive chandeliers, and splendid floors. Although this is a super-luxurious, exquisite jewel of a hotel, the ambiance exudes the warmth and friendliness of a private home. There is hardly a hint of commercialism: guests are warmly welcomed at the door; registration is discreetly accomplished in the guestroom; the mini-bar is stocked with complimentary drinks; suitcases are unpacked (if the guest so desires) and whisked away to storage; laundry and dry cleaning are complimentary; drinks in the bar can be signed for on the honor system. For quality and sumptuous accommodations, the Villa Feltrinelli is an incredible value.
