La Pergola

La Pergola is an attractive, moderately-priced small hotel nestled in a quaint hamlet just a short walk over the hill from Bellagio. Although it officially rates only one star, in my estimation it deserves far more. Originally a 15th-century convent, it came into Marilena Mazzoni’s family in 1732 and has been passed down from generation to generation ever since. The pretty, creamy-yellow building with dark-green shutters snuggles right by the lake and features an enchanting terrace-restaurant at the edge of the water. The charm of the hotel continues within where a fresh, uncluttered, old-world ambiance is displayed throughout. The dining room is most attractive, with fresh white walls accented by copper pots, wooden chairs and tables, and a vaulted ceiling. The guestrooms vary in size but each is tastefully decorated using some antique furnishings; all have modern tiled bathrooms. I was captivated by La Pergola, but when I first met Signora Mazzoni, she was reluctant to have her property in our guide for fear that it would attract the wrong kind of guests—those looking for more amenities than her simple hotel provides. I assured her our readers are different, valuing charm and comfort rather than luxurious amenities.
