One of many wonders of Italy is that within a few kilometers, the landscape, wines, food, traditions and dialect change dramatically. Such is the case with the area of Lazio, between Orvieto and Viterbo, where rolling green hills transform into a gray crater-like landscape caused by soil erosion. Bagnoregio is a sleepy town often mentioned because of its smaller neighboring village Civita Bagnoregio, a recently re-inhabited protected village of Etruscan origins (population had dwindled down to 12 at one point). The village is accessed only by a foot bridge, and is surrounded by a dramatic valley of volcanic tufo rock used to build the local houses. You can explore Civita Bagnoregio from the Romantica Pucci. Hosts Pucci and Lamberto are retired and warmly welcome guests into their 200-year-old home. Five bright, comfortable and romantic bedrooms are named after flowers and have an old-fashioned feel with canopy antique beds, lace doilies and curtains, floral bedspreads and soft colors. The showers are particularly spacious. Family items give a homey feel to the place and the rustic style restaurant serves typical home-style meals, which are well worth a side trip.
