Snuggled in the secluded, wooded hills of Anacapri, the stunning 19th-century Villa Le Scale is on a small lane leading to the museum, Villa San Michele, once the residence of the Swedish writer/philosopher/physician, Axel Munthe. For 20 years, Villa Le Scale was the private home of your charming hostess, Anna Maria Coronato, who has converted it into a sumptuous small hotel. It is no wonder that the finished project is so outstanding, since Anna Maria is a well-known antique and art dealer who has traveled the world collecting treasures for her clients. You enter into a beautiful park that abounds with mature shade trees. Manicured gardens, sculptures, and a very attractive swimming pool enhance the appealing scene. A broad stairway shaded by a trellis and bordered by white columns leads to a fairy-tale white villa that nestles on a gentle hill. Once inside, it is instantly obvious that this is a very special, luxurious hotel. The sun-filled rooms are spacious, and tastefully display museum quality antiques and art. Each of the eight guestrooms is individually decorated around a theme with every piece lovingly selected. One of my favorites, the Venetian Room, has a spectacular Venetian bookcase framing the entrance to the bathroom featuring a handsomely tiled, very large, Turkish shower. The bedroom opens onto a spacious private terrace, where you enjoy breakfast to the serenade of birds.
