Hotel Zugspitze

The popular villages of Garmisch and Partenkirchen, nestling up against dramatic, towering Alpine peaks, offer a wide choice of places to stay. We were thrilled to find the truly exceptional Hotel Zugspitze, a lovely, first-class hotel “with heart” looking up to Germany’s highest peak. It has a definite Tyrolean feel, from the balconies laden with overflowing geraniums to the beautiful pines and soft colors used to decorate the interior. Off the entry, a lovely salon with intimate sitting areas and a crackling fire looks out to a garden where tables are set in warm weather and tucked just off the salon is a very inviting library bar. The breakfast room is light and airy in soft colors of yellow and green, and the cozy restaurant offers excellent regional specialties. Amenities include a beautiful pool, three saunas and a fitness room. The guestrooms, many with balconies, are absolutely lovely with pine furniture, and fabrics and wallpaper friezes in soft colors. I loved our room, 103, looking up to the Zugspitze, which had its own balcony, a desk, and a seating area with sofa bed and chairs in front of a TV. All the suites and apartments are located on the third floor, under the eaves. Although all the rooms are charming, ask for one in the Stammhaus, where they are just a little more spacious.
