I travel frequently all over the world and been fortunate to stay in many magnificent and world class hotels. Yet I find myself drawn every year to the wonderful gem that the Dower House is. Heading down the main drive of the property,lined with rich greenery, you soak in the beauty of nature and a sense of peace and being at home. Robyn and Mena have created an ambiance of being welcomed as friends into their home. Joining fellow guests for pre dinner drinks either on an endless bright summer evening or in front of the fireplace on a winter’s night, is simply a treat and resonant of Victorian style and warmth. Robyn’s cooking is simply outstanding and his use of local and home grown produce is a delight to the senses. His creativity and natural cooking skills combine to produce tastes which are both subtle, yet filled with an earthiness and freshness, leaving a sense of having just been lifted from the surrounding gardens. All this is served in a dining room filled with warm colours and furniture echoing the very best of taste. The bedrooms simply complement the experience of warmth and style. The Dower House is an enduring testimony to the highest standards of unpretentious quality and creates an experience which soothes the senses and lingers in the heart and mind, drawing us back again and again. This is truly Highland hospitality, charm and class at it’s very best.

it is not often that I feel compelled to put pen to paper about somewhere that I have stayed. But the Dower house is special enough for me to make the effort. My job requires me to travel the world, I currently live in Singapore and to say I am a bit jaded by plastic chain hotels even of the better class, is an understatement. This hotel is as far away from that as you can get. It is crammed full of character and style, you feel instantly at home and gentle serenity envelops you as you walk through the door. The friendliness of the Atchisons that run this little jewel is equal to the environment. Nothing is too much trouble but they also know the value of personal space and do not overdo the attention. The rooms are all unique with claw foot baths, unusual furniture and Scottish touches. The sheets are to die for, as are the very fluffy white towels. The garden, which is magnificent, is an added bonus, not sure why they do not advertise it more,with a large pond and a deck and their very own visiting deer! Being allergic to fish I am often difficult to feed. But here my replacements on the menu were far from boring (pigeon breast salad to name but one)and served with a smile and more importantly remembered throughout my stay -as was my liking for the fine wines on their extensive wine list! Their knowledge of the areas was second to none and if Mena did not know the answer a quick word with Robyn (her husband and the chef) would elicit the answer and probably the full history too. If you really want a treat and some where that little bit different but with those touches of class then this is the place for you and do yourselves a favor and stay a few days, I wished I had longer and will certainly go back.
