Karen's Review Of This Property:

Tucked away at the edge of the small town of Thornbury is Thornbury Castle and from the moment you see it you will be enchanted. Construction began in 1510 at the order of the 3rd Duke of Buckingham, but ceased when he was beheaded in 1521 at the Tower of London. The current owners continue the upkeep of this partially restored castle, leaving other areas as a romantic ruin. Dinner in the baronial dining rooms is a leisurely affair. Softly carpeted hallways lead to the bedrooms—this is no longer a castle of drafty stone passages. The guestrooms are elegantly decorated as befits their castle surroundings, several with four-poster beds, all with lovely bathrooms. The large octagonal tower room has a four-poster bed and its own turret staircase. Nearby Slimbridge Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre was founded by Sir Peter Scott (son of the explorer) in 1946. Just south of Slimbridge you find Berkeley and Berkeley Castle where Edward II was murdered in the dungeon in 1327. Also in the grounds is the Jenner museum, a tribute to Edward Jenner, discoverer of the smallpox vaccination.
