Karen's Review Of This Property:
Dating back in part as far as the 13th century, replete with a fascinating mix of mullioned windows, stone floors, heavy wooden beams, and large open fireplaces, The Bridge House is awash in character. Originally a clergy house, communal home to ten or twelve priests, it has been tastefully converted to a classic small country hotel and restaurant by owners Joanna & Mark Donovan. With flowers and books tucked away in various nooks and crannies, the public rooms are cozy and relaxed but on finer days guests may choose to retreat to the sunny conservatory or venture outside to the walled garden. Fourteen lovely bedrooms of different shapes and sizes are distributed between the main house and coach house across the courtyard to the rear. All have fresh flowers, fine linen from Italy, flat screen TVs and state of the art bath and shower rooms. Our favorites were the larger “superior” rooms in the main house. At the heart of the operation is the food—fresh ingredients from local farms and fishing ports are artfully transformed by the kitchen staff and served in the paneled dining room. Beaminster has some lovely Georgian houses and there are fine gardens at Forde Abbey and Clapton Court. Nearby are Sherborne (castle and abbey), Cricket St. Thomas Wildlife Park, and Cerne Abbas (abbey and giant cut in the chalk hills almost 2,000 years ago).
