At the Green Grape / Hotel U Zeleného hroznu

The romantic hotel U Zeleného hroznu (At the Green Grape) is ideally situated half way along the Royal Route between Prague Castle and the famous Charles Bridge. For centuries the grand coronation processions of Czech sovereigns passed along this traditional royal route prior to the coronation ceremony itself, thus this location became celebrated all over the world. And it is here, in the quiet little street Jánský vršek, that you will find our stylish, period hotel.

The hotel is located in one of the oldest houses in the Prague district Malá Strana, with its unique original Renaissance timber interior, Renaissance vaulting and Baroque painted ceilings. The exceptional blend of artistic styles, and the fusion of Gothic contours with Baroque curves, go together to create perfect harmony. In order to reinforce the spirit of this unique house, we furnished the interiors with original period furniture and works of art. The breathtaking location of this site, famed throughout Europe, was shaped over the centuries to become what it is today, after hundreds of years of urban development – streets and public spaces, fortifications, church property, seats of the nobility and burghers, and the dwellings of tradesmen and ordinary people.

The first written records about the house date from the year 1633, when a new neighbourhood began to emerge around the original church of St John the Baptist in the heart of Malá Strana. To this day the house gives the impression of a tranquil, provincial residence emanating the charm of a bygone age. You will certainly be enchanted not only by the sensitively reconstructed original interiors, but also by the comforts of the modern age – bathrooms by Villeroy Boch, sofas by Wittmann, the grand masters of leather, or curtains woven by the world famous firm Backhausen. Today we’ll find the house included in several books on history and architecture, whose authors regard it as one of the most fascinating buildings in Malá Strana.

Each of the rooms represents a prominent figure in Prague’s history – such as the outstanding composer Antonín Dvořák, the opera diva Ema Destinnová, the highly talented architects J.B. Santini and K.I. Dienzenhofer, Art Nouveau painter Alfons Mucha, the mysterious astronomer Tycho de Brahe and his pupil Johannes Kepler, or the great writer Franz Kafka. All these superb rooms reveal something of the story of their namesakes and of the period in which they lived.

Delight in the unique style of the hotel suite named after Ema Destinnová. The singer had this magnificent salon and bedroom furniture crafted in 1920 for her castle in South Bohemia. Or savour the incredible views of the Prague Castle panorama while reading Kafka’s The Trial at an authentic writing desk.

The hotel boasts a Gothic wine cellar with its original well, where you can make a selection from our broad palette of both international and, in particular, Czech wines. In the summer months, start your day with breakfast in our lovely outdoor patio (atrium) and enjoy the intimacy and peaceful atmosphere, enhanced by the soft murmur of our water fountain.
