Union Street Inn

Union Street is always a favorite place to dine, shop, and play; and the several blocks stretching out at the foot of exclusive Pacific Heights offer charming restaurants and pretty boutiques in quaint Victorian houses. Right in the heart of this attractive area, in a pretty, light-yellow Victorian house with green trim, is the Union Street Inn. Steps on the left side of the building lead up to the front door, which opens into a small reception foyer. To the left is an old-fashioned sitting room all kitted out in period furniture. Doors from the parlor lead out to the most special feature of the inn—an exceptionally attractive, English-style garden where a brick path meanders through a medley of shrubs, flowers, and shade trees. At the end of the garden, behind a white picket fence, is an adorable cottage converted into a guest suite (The Carriage House). In the house itself are five more guestrooms, each individually decorated in a traditional style. We liked the quiet location of the English Garden Room, with its little deck overlooking the garden and enjoyed the spaciousness of the New Yorker which is large enough to accommodate both a queen and sofa bed and has a large bay window overlooking the activity of Union Street. Wine and hors d’oevres are set out for guests each afternoon, and in the morning a full breakfast is served either on the deck, in the parlor or in your room.
