Old Monterey Inn Sketch

Karen's Review Of This Property:

The historic English manor is a quintessential country inn. The Tudor-style home is beautiful—shaded by giant oak trees in an acre of wooded gardens full of colorful camellias, fuchsias, rhododendrons, and lush ferns all set in a quiet Monterey suburb. The inside of the house is an oasis of tranquility where everything is done with the comfort of the guest in mind—it’s rather like a land bound cruise ship you never go hungry: cheese, yogurt, juice and sodas are always available in the guest fridge, fresh baked cookies and hot beverages are always available; wine and hors oeuvres are on hand in the early evening and truffles are a treat when you come in from dinner. All of the bedrooms in the main house, cottage, and carriage house have fireplaces, many have whirlpool tubs for two, and all are beautifully decorated and thoughtfully appointed. In the main house one of our favorite rooms is the Brightstone Suite with its bedroom, shower room and freestanding hydration tub for two sitting beside the fireplace in the sitting room. For complete privacy opt for the privacy of the Garden Cottage, with a separate sitting room, spa for two, and a skylight for gazing at the stars. Breakfast is posted the night before and can be served at the long mahogany table in the dining room at 9am or in the privacy of your bedroom.

We just returned from a two week trip to No. California and ended with a three night stay at The Old Monterey Inn and were quite pleased with it. Our room - The Library - with its own little veranda overlooking the beautiful rambling gardens was cozy but charming, albeit a bit cramped with the several pieces of large luggage we needed. The decor and firm but comfy feather mattress was tasteful and inviting, and the wood burning fireplace added to the romantic atmosphere. A bit more lighting might be helpful in the bathroom but the amenities were excellent. We could have chosen to eat on our porch each morning but rather join the other guest chatting at the beautifully set table in the dining room. The breakfasts were excellent and elegantly served. We especially enjoyed returning after a busy day of jaunting to the fire, wine and yummy hors d’oeuvres in the spacious living room and the generous supply of courtesy beverages in the guest refrigerator. Having access to the computer was a plus in making travel plans and flight check-ins. All the staff was most helpful and pleasant. Even the maintenance person was a help when my husband needed to wash our car in an area provided in the back driveway! We find staying at smaller inns and B&B’s more intimate and relaxing than the large hotels and lodges, and this one surely didn’t disappoint us.

I had the good fortune of a two night stay at the Old Monterey Inn and I can hardly wait to return. Monterey is not a particularly attractive town so I especially enjoyed the peace and quiet of beautiful gardens and the lush greenery. My room was spacious and I loved the spa bathtub in the evening. The breakfasts were sinfully delicious, afternoon cookies wonderful and appetizers and wine at 5:00 almost made me want to forgo dinner. But I didn’t and was greated with truffles and port upon my return. The staff was friendly, beautifully trained, and eager to make your visit special. They succeeded!

I booked the Old Monterey Inn for two nights with a good friend. Our rooms were beautiful. Every detail was thought of and they were beautifully appointed--from the linens, the movies for the the TVs in the room, to the amenities in the bathroom. The meals were delicious. They included breakfast (in the location of your choice), cookies and beverages during the day, wine in the afternoon and chocolates and port at the end of your evening. I especially enjoyed the well-stocked frig on the second floor. The staff couldn’t be more friendly or helpful. you can’t beat the dining, shopping and sightseeing in the area. I look forward to my next visit. One of many I hope.
