Tickle Pink Inn

Set high above the shore just south of Carmel, at the northern gateway to Big Sur, sits the little coastal community of Carmel Highlands. Coastal views are the name of the game at the Tickle Pink Inn and the reservations folks are particularly helpful and happy to discuss each and every vista. Whether spotting whales while sipping wine on the terrace (there is an excellent cheese and wine hour), soaking in views from your Jacuzzi tub, or gazing at coastal vistas from in front of your crackling log fire, there is a spectacular view for you. The utilitarian-like structure belies an absolutely charming interior with quality decor in restful, muted colors. Relax by the fire, borrow a movie, soak up the view from your private deck. Newspapers are delivered to your door—request breakfast to accompany them or make your own selections from the extensive breakfast buffet which we always enjoy on the heated patio. For complete seclusion opt for the Senators Cottage, the onetime two bedroom cottage of Senator and Mrs. Tickle. As the inn’s motto says, “Rest a bit for ‘tis a rare place to rest at.” Just up the road are the 1,250 acres of our favorite state reserve, Point Lobos, known as the greatest meeting of land and water in the world—be sure to visit.
