In every book there are a few favorites—inns that incorporate all the ingredients for a perfect little hotel. The Hotel Alpenrose is such an inn. One of the reasons this hotel is so special is the charm of the owner, Frau Gutwinski, who from early morning until late evening continues to orchestrate her establishment with grace and skill. She and her welcoming staff radiate charm, speak excellent English, and strive to make every detail welcoming and perfect. In addition to the friendly welcome, the hotel has many other attributes: it is conveniently located (on a small side street just a block from the heart of the interesting medieval town of Feldkirch), it is very old (dating back to 1550), and it has many antiques. The guestrooms are quite charming—each different and furnished with loving care and a few well-chosen antiques. Those on the top floor (the latest part of the hotel to be renovated) are the most deluxe. Number 31, a suite with windows looking out over the rooftops to the castle on the mountain, is especially romantic. The ambiance throughout is more that of a private home than a commercial hotel. Summer evenings find you dining outside under the linden tree, an exquisite place to relax after a day’s sightseeing. In inclement weather the same delicious fare is offered inside in the delightful restaurant where a buffet breakfast is served in the morning.

The hotel is situated in mid-town, accessed by car through a very narrow alley. The initial impression was ’OK,’ being a gardener, I was not impressed by the many weeds growing in the outdoor dining area. Carpets in the lobby looked in need of cleaning as did the carpet in our room (23.) The room was furnished in older pieces (not antique)that were well worn and in need of some TLC. The modern bathroom had a shower stall only, fine except that there was black mold on the door and the grout. The hotel is not air conditioned and it was close to 90 degrees when we arrived. Fortunately, there are few insects since we had to leave our windows open the full time we were there due to the heat. The hotel has a good restaurant, but hotel guests should make reservations for both lunch and dinner, since the restaurant is often fully booked. Smoking is allowed in the bar, adjacent to the dining room. The employees were friendly and helpful, several spoke English well enough. However, the lunch menu is entirely in German and the waitstaff may or may not speak English. I did not feel this particular hotel was of the standard that I expect from a Karen Brown recommendation. We’ve always been pleased to delighted with the recommendations, but we felt this hotel was just ’average’ aside from the dining room cuisine.
