It all began when a Viennese brewing entrepreneur, during the boom years of the mid 19th century, had his dream villa built in the Salzkammergut region of Upper Austria. Even today, guests of this estate owned by the Koller family – an estate which experienced the ups and downs of history spanning two world wars –still feel like they are being treated like royalty. Tasteful rooms and suites are a temptation for guests to stay on and enjoy the magnificent view. My husband and I chose to celebrate my birthday with a trip to the Salzkammergut region of Austria. The Landhaus Koller was the highlight of our visit. It’s situated in a charming valley near Lake Gosau, with the Dachstein mountains in clear view from our room and dining terrace. Church bells chime in the distance, and we were able to have dinner by candlelight each night on the terrace. The meals and wine were excellent, and the staff is warm and attentive.
