Schlosshotels & Herrenhäuser Guide’s Description:
Hotel Schloss Stubenberg

It is time to slow things down – this is the motto, true to which the owners of Schloss Stubenberg invite their guests to discover for themselves, outside the constraints of space and time, the high art of idleness.
You, the person, are the measure of all things in this historical setting on the “Castle Road”. Here, where nature and culture intersect, you will be able to find the way back to your true self.  As Pablo Picasso once put it, “art washes away from the soul the dust of daily life “.

The rooms of Schloss Stubenberg, in their architectural clarity and the simplicity of their forms and lines, lend themselves perfectly as such “soul-washers”. Likewise, the beautiful breakfast terrace proves itself to be a very special highlight, providing an irresistibly inviting setting in which to sip on a glass of wine at sunset. And the enchanting, gently undulating landscapes of Eastern Styria which surround the Stubenbergsee, manage to utterly captivate our guests.

Schloss Stubenberg is an imposing structure, constructed on the foundations of an ancient 13th-century steward’s house and expanded in the 16th century into a castle. The Lords of Stubenberg are one of the oldest and historically most significant noble families of Styria. In 1632, the castle came into the possession of the Herbersteiners, subsequently being acquired by Count Wurmbrand in the 19th century.
After the First World War, the old castle was transformed for more than a half century into a convent run by the Franciscan order, until finally coming into private hands in 1980, since which time it has served as a very vibrant cultural centre.

Since 2001, the Stubenberg, now freshly restored, has served both as a lodging establishment, concert hall and tavern.  Aside from the joys of dining at the Stubenberg, groups are also invited to spend unforgettable evenings in the ambience of the romantic fireside room, or perhaps in the banquet hall, with performances of minstrels’ songs, renaissance music and authentic Styrian folk music – and when the celebration is over, it will be time to withdraw and sleep like a king (or queen!).
