Even among Austria’s superb selection of castle hotels, the Schloss Kapfenstein stands out as very special. Once a fortress, it strategically crowns the crest of a hill and enjoys panoramic views over the tranquil countryside. Guests will enjoy its fantastic dining room whose gourmet menu is paired with some marvelous wines produced from the Schloss’s own vineyards; comfortable to absolutely luxurious accommodation and warm hospitality as extended by the Winkler-Hermaden family. After raising five children in the Schloss, gracious and beautiful Eva is responsible for renovating and converting this fortress and family home to a hotel. Two of her sons and their wives have now joined her. Her son Martin, a most talented chef, has taken charge of the kitchen while his wife, Elizabeth, helps serve and welcome guests. There is a beautiful dining room in the castle, but in summer, meals are usually enjoyed outside on a terrace that stretches along the top of the castle walls: a setting that offers a stunning panorama of rolling hills, vineyards, and quiet villages. Another son, Georg, oversees the vineyards and production of award winning wines. Be sure to visit their winery and shop. Georg and his wife, Margot, are responsible for the recent updates to the decor and the renovation of the gate keeper’s quarters (Pförtnerhaus) and the tower (Burgfried) into beautiful and architecturally stunning suites—the Von Lengheim is incredible. The Schloss Kapfenstein is a gem.
