Karen's Review Of This Property:
If the thought of slipping back through the ages and living in an authentic romantic castle appeals to you, then we highly recommend the Burg Bernstein. It has everything one dreams of in the castle department—enormous rooms, priceless antiques, a hilltop setting, towers, turrets, an old well, a prehistoric museum, and even a resident ghost. The ghost is the wandering spirit of a beautiful young woman, the wife of a medieval owner of the castle. But she is a friendly ghost and you will never be bothered in the comfort of your bedroom—and what rooms they are! A few are just large bedrooms, but most of the accommodations are suites. One of my favorites, Lori, has a handsome antique bed of fine inlaid woods, casement windows overlooking the valley, and a very large, modern bathroom. The castle has passed down through the same family for several generations. Staying here is truly like being a guest in a family home—there are not even keys to the bedrooms. Frau Berger is in charge of the kitchen and her meals, featuring traditional recipes she learned as a girl from the family cook, are exceptional. Breakfast is often served in the central courtyard, while dinner is usually taken in a magnificent dining room with frescoed walls, deeply recessed windows, and ornate plasterwork. Plan to come and stay awhile—Burg Bernstein makes an excellent base for exploring the castles of Burgenland.
Schlosshotels & Herrenhäuser:
Burg Bernstein is beyond doubt a truly noble edifice, perched commandingly on a rocky boulder high above the Hungarian lowlands, casting its glance squarely back towards its storied past. No traffic noise and no telephone in your room to disturb the lordly atmosphere of tranquillity and contemplation.
Naturally, every evening our guests dine splendidly by candlelight in the Knights’ Hall, not least because the lady of the castle is an outstanding chef.
The rooms, some of which still feature fires which are fed from the hallway, are powered by electric, if only so that, when evening sets in, you can clearly see the magnificent fireplaces, the brocade curtains and the captivating antiques.
