Germany

Saxony

Overview:

The region of Sachsen has a rich history although many would like to forget its most recent past.  Under East German Communist rule after World War II until the "wall" came down in 1989, the region is showing signs of a full recovery to its glorious past.

The capital and jewel of the Sachsen state is Dresden, a city almost totally destroyed during the war. The city's famous skyline of palace domes and majestic church steeples on a bend of the Elbe River was razed by Allied bombers on February 13, 1945. Today, many of the buildings have been cleaned and restored to their former glory.

The Sachsen region has much to offer and we cover a portion of the area in our itinerary, 'Exploring East & Middle Germany'. Worth a visit in the area are the cities of Meissen, Pillnitz and Bastei including the region known as Swiss Saxony.
