Lower Austria
Overview:
Lower Austria, or Niederösterreich, lies to the east of Upper Austria and derives its name from the fact that it lies lower on the Danube which flows through the region in an easterly direction. Lower Austria borders the Czech Republic to its north and Slovakia to its east while surrounding the province and city of Vienna. If time allows we recommend a side-trip into the charming town of Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic, a two-hour drive north of Linz.
Lower Austria is dotted throughout with many old fortified castles . Some are still standing although many have fallen into ruin. There is an abundance of monasteries and churches throughout the region. A wonderful destination exemplifying the castles and religion is the tiny hamlet of Dürnstein overlooking the Danube. Still walled, the village boasts colorful houses, a tiny square, a lovely monastery and castle ruins atop the hill. An added bonus is that Durnstein is located in a wonderful wine region of Lower Austria which produces most of the delightful Austrian wines.
The scenery, history, wine, charming hotels and Schlosses as well as an abundance of spa resorts located in the province are ample reasons to visit Lower Austria.
